Yes, my dog is spoiled, but she totally deserves it. She’s so stinkin’ cute, it’s ridiculous! Isis is kind of picky, so when I started making her dog treats, I was hoping she wouldn’t turn her nose up at them. So far, we’ve tried 6 different recipes and this one is her favorite. Let me know what your pup thinks!

peanut butter dog treats recipe

What you need:

1/4 cup honey
1/2 cup all natural peanut butter
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
1 cup natural apple juice
1 tablespoon canola oil
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
1 cup white whole wheat flour
3/4 cup all-purpose flour

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 300*F. In a saucepan, whisk together the honey, peanut butter, applesauce, apple juice, and oil. Cook ingredients over medium heat until it simmers and thickens. Remove mixture from heat, and stir in rolled oats.

Allow mixture to cool for about 15 minutes. Stir in the whole wheat flour, and all purpose flour to form a stiff dough. Divide dough in half.

Lightly flour a cookie sheet or counter, and roll one portion of the dough out to about 1/4 inch thick. Repeat with other portion. Cut the dough out using a cookie cutter shaped like a dog bone (or other shape). Place cookie cut outs onto anungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for 20 minutes, turn the treats over and bake for another 15 minutes. When all batches are done cooking, turn the oven off and place all of the treats onto one large cookie sheet. Place the cookies in the oven for an hour as the oven cools.

Place dog treats in an airtight container to store at room temperature for up to one month.

Diane @ Philzendia - I’m not a dog owner so when I think dog food and treats, I always think about store bought stuff. I never thought people actually baked stuff for their dogs. Cool!

Jen - Life With Levi - Awesome recipe! A tip for those who have dogs with wheat allergies (one of the more common pet allergens) – you can substitute rice flour instead in most dog treat recipes.

Meg - I shared this recipe with my mom. Her 3 dogs love them. My dog wasn’t a fan – but she doesn’t particularly care for peanut butter.

Summer Davis - If I had a dog, I would make its treats all the time. These sound finger-lickin-good, man!
