White Chocolate Chex Mix is an easy and festive holiday snack or dessert recipe! Made with Chex cereal, pretzels, peanuts, candy, and white chocolate; it comes together in just a few minutes!
With the holidays right around the corner, I almost forgot to share my famous party Chex mix recipe with you! I love making it because it’s easy, doesn’t require many ingredients, and can be made ahead of time!
While I usually make it near Christmas, you can always swap a few ingredients to make it a great year-round snack, which I will give some recommendations towards the end!
You may also have heard this recipe being called White Trash Chex Mix or Christmas Crack, either way, it’s the best combo of sweet and salty, and be prepared because it can be addicting!
What You Need for White Chocolate Chex Mix
Chex Cereal – you can use a variety of Chex cereal or just one; I chose Corn and Rice
Honey Nut Cheerios – swap these for regular Cheerios if you want to!
Pretzels – sticks or mini twists work the best
Roasted peanuts – try to get the lightly salted kind if you can
M&M’s – grab the holiday version for a more festive look
White chocolate – can use candy melts, white chocolate chips, or white chocolate baking bars
Holiday-themed sprinkles of your choice
How to Make Holiday Chex Mix
Toss together the Chex, Cheerios, pretzels, and peanuts in an extra-large bowl.
Spread the party mix onto a baking sheet (lined with parchment paper if desired). The best cookie sheet to use is one that has sides that are a little taller to keep the mix from spilling out.
Sprinkle the holiday M&Ms over the top.
In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the white chocolate for a minute, then stir.
After stirring, if the chocolate isn’t smooth and there are still large chunks, microwave in 15-second increments until it has completely melted. Be careful to not overcook!
Use a tablespoon to drizzle the chocolate (or slowly pour) over the party Chex mix.
Before the white chocolate dries, add the sprinkles.
Using your hands or a spoon, toss the Chex mix to make sure the chocolate is distributed evenly.
Give it at least 15 minutes to rest before serving or storing.
Transfer the mix to a large party bowl!
What’s the Best White Chocolate to Use?
If you use chocolate at all during baking you know that they are not all created equally. You want a good white chocolate that doesn’t curdle easily and that is silky smooth when melting instead of grainy, thick, and yucky.
I recommend using Lily’s Baking Chocolate or Ghirardelli chocolate. I have always had good experiences with both of these. Also, Lily’s is gluten-free, non-GMO, and all the other things.
Tips for Making
- DO NOT OVERCOOK THE CHOCOLATE. This will ruin your party mix. If you find your chocolate is too thick but you can’t melt it anymore, use a little coconut oil to thin it out.
- Work quickly after adding the melted chocolate. If it sets up before you add the sprinkles, they won’t stick.
Is Chex Cereal Gluten Free?
There are 9 varieties of Chex mix cereal, and 8 of those are gluten-free. The only one that is not gluten-free is Wheat Chex.
Chex cereal is also free of artificial flavors, colors, and high fructose corn syrup.
More Ideas for Chex Party Mix Variations
Swap out the red and green M&Ms for other colors or seasonal varieties (Valentine’s or Pastels for the Spring) when making it for another occasion. Aside from that, here are some other mix-in options.
- Pecans, walnuts, cashews, almonds, macadamia nuts
- Reese pieces
- Snickers pieces
- Peanut butter chips
- Coconut
- Some even add dried fruit!
- Use milk or dark chocolate instead
Chex Snack Mix as an Edible Gift idea
Party mix is great for a small, budget-friendly edible gift idea for teachers, neighbors, co-workers, and families!
Grab some cheap party bags or decorative tins and add the mix. Top with a festive card for an easy gift idea.
If you are putting the mix in a tin, you can add some tissue paper to jazz it up a bit.
Storage Instructions
Once the holiday Chex mix has cooled down, you can store it at room temperature in an airtight container for about 4 days.
