The first step when learning how to make coconut shampoo is learning how to make coconut milk. For this, you’ll just need unsweetened shredded coconut, hot water, cheesecloth, and an awesome blender.

How to Make Coconut Milk:
Pour 2 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut into your blender. Add 4 cups of hot water, and blend for several minutes (until the mixture is thick and creamy). {I received a DynaBlend to review, and this was our first project.}
To drain the coconut mixture, I put cheesecloth in a strainer, over a pot. If the water is still hot, be careful when squeezing! The coconut meat will stay in the cheesecloth, while the milk will go into the pot. Transfer the milk to your container of choice (I used a canning jar), then throw the rest away (or do something super crunchy with it like eat it.. I don’t care).
The next step? Pause to enjoy a few sips of coconut milk. Mmmmmm….
Tip: Your fresh coconut milk will stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 3 days if you plan on drinking it. Sometimes the coconut milk will separate when being stored in the refrigerator. If this happens, just stir, then serve. If you want to spice it up a bit, add 1/2 teaspoon vanilla and 2 teaspoons cocoa powder.
How to Make Coconut Shampoo:
For this step, you’ll need some castile soap. I used the lavender kind, but if you use the unscented kind you’ll want to add some essential oils (about 15 drops). I bought a BIG bottle at Sprouts for $13.99. It’ll last pretty much forever.
Combine 3/4 cup coconut milk with 1 cup castile soap in your container of choice. You could use a mason jar with a pump lid, or any old shampoo bottle. We used a Lubriderm container. You will use about a teaspoon of this coconut shampoo each time you wash your hair. Use within a month (so reduce the recipe if this is just for you, and not your entire family).
