Charlotte is a great place to take the kids. It has a relaxed pace of life, a wide range of family attractions, and – unlike many other large American cities – it’s easy to drive around and park. However, as with any destination, it’s always worth putting in some planning to make your visit as stress-free as possible. So, if you’re thinking about taking a family break to Charlotte, here’s what you need to know to make it as stress-free as possible:
Nail Down Your Logistics Early
Charlotte is a sprawling city with sparse public transit, so it’s worth planning your transport logistics well in advance. Quite honestly, Charlotte works best if you have a car. So, if you’re flying in, it’s probably a good idea to look into Charlotte airport car rental, so you can get off the plane and into your vacation ride straight away.
If you don’t have a car and don’t intend to hire one, there are some options. You might miss out on some of the further-flung destinations, but there are several places in Uptown and the South End that you can reach via the light rail and the bus network, though confusing – it does reach a few further-out destinations.
Do be prepared to have to wrestle with strollers, toys, picnics, and other gear if you’re opting for public transit, however, and bear in mind that you’re likely to be doing a lot of walking from bus stops and train stations to your destination, which can be tricky with kids.
The other option, of course, is to take Ubers, or Lyfts, or private taxis from place to place. This can get expensive, but it will make it easier for you and your children to get where you need to go. If you’re only spending a few days in the city, this might be a good option. You can spend the majority of your time in the easier-to-access areas, and use Uber and Lyft for the occasional foray further afield.
Pick The Right Location
Where you stay can have a big impact on your travel times and your kids’ routines. Staying somewhere within the central hub – Uptown or South End, for example – will give you plenty of hotel options and easy access to buses and trains. However, both of these districts are busy and bustling, so you may find it harder to get your kids down for relaxing naps and peaceful nights’ sleep.
Further out, in places like South Park or in suburban hotels near attractions like Carowinds or the Greensboro Science Center, you’re likely to find more family-friendly accommodation options. However, you’ll also have further to travel to get to places like the airport or more central attractions and amenities.
So, bear Charlotte’s car-centric, spread-out nature in mind, as well as your family’s specific needs, when picking your hotel.
Packing And Preparation
Good packing will help a lot with your smooth, stress-free trip. As well as all the strollers, toys, and clothing essentials you know you’ll need, also think about things like:
- Snacks to keep hunger at bay during long drives
- Weatherproof layers. While the weather in Charlotte is usually pretty mild, rainstorms can come on suddenly, and the temperature is likely to drop if you’re heading into the mountains. So, layers that you can take on and off as needed are very useful.
- Sun protection. The summer sun can be very strong in the Carolinas.
- Portable chargers for devices – especially if you’re planning on heading for long days out.
- Entertainment options to keep your kids occupied during downtime.
Pick Activities That Work For Everyone
You can’t please all the people all the time, but you can create a Charlotte itinerary that gives everyone something to look forward to. Charlotte has a lot of great attractions, so it’s easy to make a diverse list of activities that will suit every member of your family. Here are some suggestions:
- Discovery Place Science. An interactive science museum in Uptown with hands-on exhibits, an IMAX theatre, and activities designed for young children and school-age visitors.
- ImaginOn. A children’s library and theater space with reading areas, play zones, and live performances that give younger kids a quiet break from sightseeing.
- Freedom Park. A large city park with playgrounds, open lawns, walking paths, and ponds. A good place for picnics and outdoor play.
- Carowinds. Carowinds is a Six Flags theme park with exciting rides and attractions. There’s also a Snoopy-themed area inside designed for younger children, with gentle rides, character appearances, and shaded rest areas for families.
- U.S. National Whitewater Center. An outdoor recreation complex with walking trails, open space, and seasonal water activities that suit older children and active families.
- Greensboro Science Center. A combined zoo, aquarium, and science museum about 90 minutes from Charlotte that offers a full day of educational, hands-on experiences for families.
Further afield, you can head up into the Blue Ridge Mountains, or out to Lake Norman or Chimney Rock for sublime views and nature trails.
