Yes, I have watched Bridgerton! Twice. It really is that good. I am now waiting for the next episode to drop and it is killing me. I’ve started watching some of my old favorites. I’ve made a list of 10 shows like Bridgerton to watch while you wait for season 3 to return. I hope you will love it. But first, a bit about the show.
The time period is the early 1800’s and it seems to reference a period in England’s history when King George III was very ill and the Queen was running the kingdom. A lot is going on in society but the focus is romance and marriage. Every young girl will soon enter society with a single purpose; to find a man to marry her. If she can do that, it will take her troubles away and provide security and protection to her and her family.
If Bridgerton Season 2 was all about Anthony Bridgerton, and his search for the perfect viscountess, Season 3 is shaping up to be about younger brother, Colin Bridgerton. Colin spent most of Season 2 traveling and getting over a heartbreak. He is back in a big way in Season 3 and, together with his great friend Penelope Featherington, is adding the steam and heat in spades.
Throughout the seasons, the show hints of social change coming to England. A time when women knew they were smart, funny and just as capable as men. Most are holding out for real love (not arrangements) while others are trying to avoid marriage all together, in order to think and do for themselves. These forward thinking notions combine with beautiful scenery, incredible Bridgerton costumes, sexy accents and all the romance and gossip you can handle.
What’s not to love?
Shows like this do it for me. I think it’s more about the incredible dresses and diamonds the ladies wear (just for a daily stroll through the park) than any message of changing norms. Whatever it is, I love it.
The Bridgerton Netflix series reminds me of my original favorite, Pride and Prejudice. I’ve had arguments (well, soft ones) with those who swear the original Pride and Prejudice was the best. But, I am a fan of Keira Knightly and her 2005 remake of Pride and Prejudice is one of the best movies ever made.
In it, Keira plays Elizabeth Bennet, a young woman coming of age with her four sisters in the early 1800’s outside of London. Elizabeth Bennet’s parents are desperately trying to get any of their five daughters to marry quickly. As the parents have no male heir, their home and land will soon revert to a male cousin, should one of their daughters fail to marry soon and produce a son.
If you have not seen it, and you consider yourself a romantic, you simply must.
