Did you know that epsom salt isn’t really salt? It’s actually a naturally occurring mineral compound of sulfate and magnesium. It has been used as a natural treatment for many ailments for ages, but did you know it can also be used in beauty treatments, around the house, and in gardening?
10 Uses for Epsom Salt
1. Supersize it. Add more volume to your hair by mixing the same amount of Epsom salt and deep conditioner. Warm it in a pan. Apply to your hair and leave it in for about 20 minutes then thoroughly rinse out. The Epsom salt being added to your conditioner helps strip your hair of excess oil. The excess oil can weighs your hair down and leaves it looking flat. You can repeat this weekly.
2. Cool it. We visited San Diego last week, and I totally got a sunburn! I used a spray bottle and mixed one cup of water with two tablespoons of Epsom salt. Sprayed it on my burn and it helped just like aloe does.
3. Splinter removal. Splinters are painful and can be tricky to get out from under the skin, especially with kids! Soaking in Epsom salt will draw the splinter out easily.
4. Relaxation. When you soak in Epsom salt it is absorbed though your skin and it replenishes the magnesium levels in your body. Magnesium helps your body produce serotonin (the chemical in your brain that creates the feeling of relaxation and calm).
5. Moisten your lips. If you suffer from dry lips, you’re going to love this! Mix a teaspoon of Vaseline with few tablespoons of epsom salt. Apply to your lips and gently rub it in. This will help remove the dry and dead skin and will leave your lips feeling healthier and looking fuller.
6. Sleep it off. If you’re having trouble sleeping, try soaking in a warm bath with Epson salt before bed. Epsom salt helps relax your muscles and sooth your skin which can help you relax and sleep better.
7. Pamper your feet! One of the most well known uses for Epsom salt is for feet. It helps increase circulation and reduce swelling. This makes it a great treatment for many foot issues. Just a 15 to 20 minute soak in warm water with Epsom salt can help improve joint main, foot and toe fungus, swollen feet, and even foot odor.
8. Get rid of mosquitoes! If you’re a magnet for misquotes like I am, then this is one for you! Soak a cotton washcloth in cold water with Epsom salt. Use about 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt per cup of water. Then apply the washcloth to the bite. This also helps with poison ivy and bee stings.
9. Cleanse your face. Want to add a little boost to your regular facial cleanser? Just add a half of a teaspoon of Epsom salt to your cleansing cream. Massage it into your skin and rinse off with cold water.
10. Exfoliate. Mix a little Epsom salt with baby oil for a great exfoliating hand wash.
