Losing weight is simple.
Note that I said simple, not easy.
How is it simple? Weight loss works off a basic principle of burning more calories than you take in. That means you eat foods that aren’t full of empty calories, you do some exercise to create a calorie deficit, and the weight comes off. Simple, right? Simple and easy aren’t the same thing, though, or we would all be model size. Add in health issues and weight loss seems anything but simple for many of us.
When you're trying to lose weight, you need to make things as easy for yourself as you possibly can. That means you are going to need to do some planning. What great change ever came about as a result of poor planning? It happens sometimes, but it is pretty rare. To plan well, we are going to need every tool at our disposal – especially when it comes to meal planning. Any tool that is going to make your job easier needs to shoot to the top of your list. For me, one of those tools is the air fryer!

What the heck is an air fryer?
Everybody loves fried food, right? I mean, I sure do. It is crispy, flavorful, and all-around amazing. The problem is, that food is dipped in oil and grease, making it a not great option if you are serious about your weight loss. The air fryer changes all of that up. It uses a type of convection that produces crispy fried foods without using oil. That means you’ll get all of the flavor and fun without the fat. When I first saw commercials for this thing, I thought it was too good to be true. I mean, it's basically like cooking it in the oven, isn't it? Soggy fries, dry chicken… not my cup of tea, so to speak.
The air fryer is a HUGE game changer for anyone who wants delicious, crispy food fast. I even made chicken breasts in the air fryer and they were super moist!
Choosing the right air fryer isn't that difficult, but I wrote a post on which ones are my favorites for budgets, small families, big families, etc.
How does this help me lose weight?
I’m glad you asked. When you are trying to lose weight, you will get SO BORED with some of the foods you’re eating if you don’t add some variety. Thankfully the plan I follow has 200+ “free” foods to keep things switched up, and most of them I can cook in the air fryer!
You will get tired of not being able to eat your favorite foods, and when that happens you are going to go on a binge. One of the easiest foods to get access to is fried foods because everybody loves them. Do not eliminate a whole food option just to lose weight – that's one thing Weight Watchers taught me early on! The air fryer is going to give you the ability to eat fried foods without feeling all guilty about it.
This is also another tool in your meal prep. Frying food is quick and easy, and when you come in tired at the end of a long day, you are going to be really, REALLY thankful for an easy option. This is another place we get off track in our dieting. We need to be able to eat food that is simple on those days when you just don’t have it in you to cook an intricate but healthy meal.
We can do all of the meal prep, planning, and buying healthy foods we want to, but if you don’t have a plan to put it all into action, you could still wind up caving and going for fast food. Set yourself up for success by knowing what you like to eat and how much energy you are going to need to put into making it. Getting realistic about our lifestyles is how we reach our goals in weight loss, and in every other area of life.
