This Instant Pot Chicken Taco Soup is ZERO POINTS on the new Weight Watchers Freestyle program! With 200 zero point foods on the new program, it's super easy to make zero point soups and meals without sacrificing flavor. Taco soup didn't sound the best to me at first, but after trying it, I'm hooked! Everyone has said this is one of THE BEST recipes they've tried, and it's 100% a staple in our house every week. This chicken taco soup freezes and reheats well, so make a huge batch!

If you're on the go all the time like we are, with a crazy schedule and even crazier kids, you'll want to make a big batch of this and have some on hand in the fridge for when dinner rolls around and you're wiped out!

Update … Chicken Taco Soup recipe now in the CROCK POT, too! Making this chicken taco soup in the crock pot is easy peasy, and it smells so good when you walk in the door after being gone for a few hours! The kids are always like, “IS THAT CHICKEN TACO SOUP I SMELL?” lol

Here is my Home Made Recipe for ZERO Point & Salt FREE Taco Seasoning

Zero Point Chicken Taco Soup

  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 15.5oz can seasoned black beans, drained
  • 1 15.5oz can light kidney beans, drained
  • 1 8oz can tomato sauce
  • 10oz bag frozen corn
  • 2 10oz cans diced tomatoes with green chilis
  • 1 packet taco seasoning
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breast
  • ½ cup water

Place all ingredients in your Instant Pot.

Make sure seal is in lid properly, apply lid, set vent to sealing.

Set instant pot to soup (or you can use manual) with high pressure for 8 minutes.

Allow to natural pressure release by not touching the vent for 10 minutes.

Shred chicken breast with two forks and place back in pot.

Serve and enjoy.

  2. I just made this and it’s wonderful. I used pinto beans rather than kidney beans. Can’t do kiidney beans. Wanted to add homily but didn’t. Can’t wait to be ready to eat. Chicken fell apart in pot when I opened it. This is a keeper. Enjoy enjoy enjoy

    1. I’m 99.9999% sure pinto beans are not zero points as they are higher in fat than other beans. If you use pinto, that’s fine and sounds good, but the soup is no longer zero points.

      1. Shannon, according to FREESTYLE, all beans are 0 points.

    1. Yes you can make it in a crockpot. Put chicken on bottom then everything else. Cook low all day

  3. I made this last night in the IP. It was very good with a lot of flavor! I have found that most everything I have made in the IP is better the next day but, this recipe was very flavorful from the get go. I can not wait to see how it is today for lunch.

  5. This is delicious, and I’m eating it all week for lunch. However, when I enter it into the point calculator on the recipe builder on WW, I keep getting 1pt at 12 servings. I believe it has something to do with the kidney beans. When I enter in 15.5 oz it tallies that up as 9pts. What am I doing wrong?

    1. You can delete my post. I contacted WW and they explained how to enter it into the system. There are still a lot of canned brands in the food bank that have points associated with them. Thanks again for the recipe. It’s delicious.

  7. I wonder if I can use my old PRESTO 104 pressure cooker. I don’t wnat an I-pot. I do have a slo cooker my daughter gave me. I am hoping to use my old pressure cooker, though.

  8. I added an extra cup of water and added it first, then the rest of the ingridents adding the tomato sauce on top and I still got a burn notice. When I opened it up everything seemed fine and the chicke was almost fully cooked. I added extra water just in case, so I put it back on the same setting and let it cook again?

  9. Will this work with chicken fajitas strips? How long? Will it be the same amount of time??

  10. Would it change the point value to add a packet of ranch dressing mix so it has a little more of the “traditional” taco soup flavor?

    1. No! Ranch powder is 0! I did that and it was delicious!

  11. I have made this many times in the crock pot. Made it today in my IP. The crock pot is better. The IP was good but more soupy. The crock pot makes it like a stew. Eliminate the water if using the crock pot.

  12. I just made this soup and it is AMAZING! How do I track it on my App? It doesn’t come up when I search it :( Must I track every ingredient separately?

    1. It’s 0 points so I just do a quick add.

  13. If I use homemade taco seasoning which has cumin and chili powder, should I still put the additional the recipe calls for?

  15. New to IP cooking, is it the soup setting for 8 mins or is it just soup setting and if done on manuel setting for 8 mins.

    1. Karen- When you use the soup setting, it typically means between 20 and 40 minutes cook time. You can adjust this if you want. However, by using manual setting and programming the pot for 8 minutes, it will cook for only 8 minutes at high temperature, and yes, for this recipe, everything will cook just fine. However, what you must know about this device, is that the “preheating” for your IP will take 20/25 or 30 minutes to preheat. THEN, there’s the 8 minutes to cook AND THEN, you have the release time (natural release about 10 minutes) so the whole Taco Chicken Soup will take up to 48 minutes to complete! Hope this helps you, keep using the IP, kinda technical at first, but you’ll be a pro in no time at all!

  16. Made this tonight. Turned out perfectly and was delicious!! 1 1/2 cups water and included the liquid from the beans. 8qt. IP…used the Soup button. Took 30 minutes to pressurize.

  18. I scanned all ingredients using WW app. It does register beans and corn as points, along with the taco seasoning. I measured out 1 cup servings and got 9 total servings at 4 points/serving.

    1. The Freestyle program is new, so the scanner has not completely caught up yet. Beans and corn are 0 points.

  19. Super good but 12 servings for one person is a bit much lol. Does it freeze well?

    1. I would just divide by 2 and do 6 servings and refrigerate it. :D

    2. I have made this soup many times in the crock pot. It keeps really well in the freezer in glass storage bowls.

  20. This is a GREAT recipe. I’ve been cooking a ton of different recipes in the instant pot. Very tasty!!
    I’ve made it twice. I did add a couple of squirts of Tabasco sauce in it.

    I made this soup and it turned out fantastic. My huband commented that is the perfect amount of seasoning/heat.
    I know all the ingrediants are 0 freestyle points…. However when you look at the freestyle ingediants checker it states that tortilla soup is 8 points.????

    1. This isn’t tortilla soup – tortillas would definitely add points. :)

  23. Followed the recipe but has “chili seasoned black beans” as that’s all I could find for seasoned. Didn’t add the chili powder as a result but followed the rest of the recipe exactly. This is a keeper. Other taco soups I have tried are too watery or not hearty or tasty enough. Enjoyed it with a dab of sour cream, a pinch of Mexican cheese mix and green onions!

  24. What size instapot do you need to make this recipe as written? Will a 6 quart work?

  27. This soup Chicken taco Soup is truly the BEST! I made it a couple weeks ago to have in the freezer for easy lunches and am going to replenish my stock this weekend.

  28. I made this tonight and got burn on my instant pot. I tried again and it did the same thing. So I then took everything out of the pot and had to clean the bottom of the pot which was really burnt and start again. I put it on manual and on low this time. Hoping it still come out alright.

  29. OMG! This is delicious! Followed directions exactly except I had only one can of tomatoes with green chiles but I also had a can of tomatoes with lime and cilantro so used them both. I made it today to have for lunches at work this week. I hope it lasts that long! My husband loves it as well so will have to share with him ;)

  31. How long would I cook in a crock pot at either low or high settings??

  32. I see where this post talks about the crockpot version of the chicken taco soup but on directions for it. Directly beneath where it talks about crockpot, it starts off showing how to do it in the instant pot. Am I missing the crockpot directions? Pleae advise as I do no have an instant pot.

  33. I’ve made this twice and my family loves it. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but I got the “burn” notice both times and did notice scorching. Do you have any suggestions to tweek this?

  36. My tomato sauce is 7 points when I scanned it on Weight Watchers..Does that mean it won’t be 0 points anymore? Also what serving size makes it 0 points?

  38. This is a stupid question, probably, but I’m a recipe follower. lol. Does this recipe call for 2 chicken breasts or 2 lbs. of chicken breast?
