You've started a blog, you're making money with your blog, and now you're wondering How to Get Sponsors to Notice Your Blog — aren't we all? This article is kind of two-fold. Y'all know I love to ramble, so of course it's pretty long. I'm going to talk to you about how to improve your blog and get sponsors (brands, companies) to notice you. I'm also going to talk about how to get in touch with the companies, and reach out to them.
How to Get Sponsors to Notice Your Blog
These are tips that I've either tried and had success with, or have heard from successful bloggers at conferences like Women Get Social. Obviously, they're still all opinions, so if you have your own opinions on this matter, I welcome you to share them in the comments! The main way I get sponsors to notice my blog is by being ME. There's only one you in the world, so focus on your strengths and don't be afraid to stand out in the crowd.
Make sure your website is always up! Choosing a reliable host is essential to being noticed by sponsors.
Put out high-quality content – always.
Not even going to elaborate on this one, because if you don't know what it means, you're reading the wronnnng post.
Blog at least a few times a week. No excuses. Unless your blog name is something like ionlyblogonceaweek.com
On a side note, never pigeonhole yourself like that… specific blog names are great, but blog names that rely on a social media platform (like omgilovetwitter.biz) are just crazy to me. That platform might disappear – then your blog is dated. Remember Myspace?
Engage with your readers.
This is a no-brainer. If you want sponsors to notice your blog, you need to stand out. While other bloggers are whining about Facebook's “algorithm”, you need to put in the legwork to figure out what your fans want to see and hear. Doing so will increase your interaction tenfold.
To increase your social media following, you have to interact. Don't just link drop and move on. Nobody cares about that mess! In 13 Ways to Increase Your Facebook Interaction, I talk about this a lot!
Know your stats, grow your stats.
In order to grow your stats, you must know your stats. So, stop what you're doing and jot down your social media stats real quick. Add your pageviews to that list, and make sure you date it. Next month, write your numbers down again. Have they grown? If not, you're doing something (or lots of somethings!) wrong. Figure out what it is, and fix it. Most likely, you need to spend more time interacting and less time link dropping. ;)
Converse with sponsors and brands via social media.
Tweet them! Email them! Call them! It's kinda like stalking, but in a totally legal, non creepy way.
Blog about brands (for free).
This is a tip I heard at #WomenGetSocial, and I don't necessarily agree with it – for several reasons. Yes, I blog about brands for free all the time. But it's never because I want them to notice me. I think if you are blogging about companies for free, other companies are going to expect (or at least ask for) the same. So, if you want to blog for free about a company that you really love, go for it. They might just email you and ask if you want to work with them. If they do email you, chat with them about details and use words like “working relationship” or “sponsored post”, so they know it's time to break out the wallet. “Is there a budget attached to this project” is great phrasing for this convo (thanks SITS Girls!).
Pitch the brands, after doing your homework.
Before you go pitching a sponsor or a brand, do your homework on the company itself. Find out their values, their needs, their marketing strategy – then send them an email.
This step is completely optional, because if you do the rest of the steps above, sponsors will be noticing you. But if you find a large company you really want to work with, holding your breath on them noticing you is probably not the best idea. Be brave and send them an email.
Not sure who to contact? Google “Company Name Press Release” and find the PR's email on the bottom of the article. ;)
Find your angle – then sell it.
This tip comes from Problogger. If you have a very targeted niche, or your blog is amazing for a reason that is very unique, let the brands know that! When I talk about my blog to companies, I explain how absolutely over the top amazing my readers are. I'm not saying that to be gushy, I'm saying it because Slap Dash Minions are super loyal. When I need their help, they are there like a good friend would be! It's insane. In return, I work really hard to help them when I can as well. This is a good angle for me, though, when it comes to brands – not all bloggers have loyal readerships like this.
Deliver results, like a freakin' rock star.
I have never had a sponsor say they didn't want to work with me again (and again), because I deliver like a rock star, every. single. time. I always treat them as if they're my only client, and the content I write is always from the heart. I'm never fake – always authentic. That is something that brands love!
Brands want to see that you can offer a good return on their investment. If they pay $300 for a post, they need to make that $300 (plus!) back. Make sure that you are worth their time and money.
