I know a lot of people, women especially, tend to skip breakfast. Either because they’re too busy, or just not hungry yet, or because they think it will help them lose weight. As we all know, the truth is, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Your momma wasn’t lying when she told you that, and neither am I. Breakfast jump starts your day in so many ways, and it’s up to you to fuel your body the right way so you aren’t dragging your tail by mid-morning.

Fresh fruit smoothies are a delicious and nutritious way to get your body powered up in the morning, and there are so many different fruits that you can add, there’s no way you could ever get bored of them! While it may be tempting to grab a smoothie from McDonald’s or another fast food joint instead, making your own fresh fruit smoothie at home is so much healthier and satisfying. It also doesn’t have to take long!

I absolutely love mango flavored anything, so mango was an obvious choice for my smoothie this morning. I was at the Farmer’s Market this weekend and saw some papayas, and wanted to try them as well. To be honest, they didn’t look too appetizing, and I thought by this time (Thursday – I bought them on Saturday), they would have gone bad. But they didn’t! They were perfect, actually. Well, technically I don’t know if they were perfect because I’ve never had a papaya before. They just seemed perfect to me.

While I had no idea how to get the papaya into the blender, the lady at the Farmer’s Market told me to peel it first, so that is what I did. I’m not sure how you’re supposed to peel a papaya, but I used my ceramic vegetable peeler and it was super easy. I then sliced it in half and removed the seeds. I diced it, and set aside a cup of the diced papaya for my smoothie. The rest (about 2 cups or so), I put in a freezer bag.

The mango was a little bit harder to peel, as the skin was tough. It was also harder to cut up, because of the big seed/pit in the middle. I got about 2 cups of diced mango out of one fruit.

Orange juice is my favorite type of juice at the moment, so I used it. You could probably use water if you wanted to save some calories, but then you might need to add a bit of sugar. I’m not sure. Try it out and let me know how it works. :)

1 cup orange juice (or pineapple, perhaps)
2 cups ice
1 cup diced papaya
1 cup diced mango

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend on high for about a minute. I found with only one cup of ice, the consistency was that of baby food, which really grossed me out. So I added another cup of ice and it was perfect. You can also add oatmeal for added health benefits. :)

This is a great breakfast for those on the go. You can dice the fruits up on the weekend and freeze them to use throughout the week. You could use bananas, strawberries, oranges, blueberries, or really any fruit. Use milk, or juice, or yogurt. Experiment with different flavors and consistencies until you find one you really enjoy drinking. You’ll be more likely to eat/drink breakfast if you actually enjoy it.

What’s your favorite fruit combination?
