Excerpt
The next morning, Morgan started school. I aimlessly wandered through museums, churches, and more tourist traps than most visitors ever saw. Gelato became my best friend, and I was only focused on seeing Alex again.
As I walked home from my first day of the endless museums, I had the feeling that I was being followed. To squelch my suspicions, I ducked into the first place I could—a market. I walked in and was greeted by the shopkeeper as I browsed the aisle. I looked back to see if anyone passed by the store, but no one did. My paranoia was still in overdrive.
I ducked my head out of the store to survey the street before I began a quick walk to the apartment. I looked at my watch as I climbed the stairs and noted that Morgan wouldn’t be home for another hour or so.
I was happy to make it inside the apartment building until I saw who was waiting by my door. Dressed from head to toe all in white, I would have thought she was an angel, but her malevolent smile, blonde hair, and evil grey eyes let me know otherwise. I turned to run away, but she quickly whipped around me and blocked my way. I wasn’t paranoid after all; the blonde woman from my dreams had followed me home.
“What do you want?” I asked, anger roiling inside of me.
“I only want to warn you. Very soon you will have something that I want and you would be wise to give it to me,” she said with a thick Eastern European accent.
“I don’t know what you want, and I damn sure wouldn’t give it to you even if I knew what it was,” I spat. I felt brave even though I was terrified.
She took her right, white-gloved hand and wrapped her fingers around my neck. “We can do this the hard way; I am not opposed to pain,” she laughed as she lifted me with one hand until my feet dangled in the air. I felt the blood rush to my face as I struggled to breathe. “I will leave you with a reminder so you know that I am serious,” she said, throwing me to the ground.
She quickly removed one of her white gloves. I fought for air as I hit the ground and looked up in time to see her perfect nails score a deep scratch on my cheek. I screamed in pain as I felt the slice. The blood streamed down my face and dripped onto my shoulder. I felt nauseous at the sight of the blood but even more so when I saw the female fiend licking the blood from her fingernail.
“Tasty,” she said before disappearing.
I blacked out. The next thing I knew, Morgan was at my side.
“What happened? Why you are asleep in the hallway?”
I turned my cheek to show her the cut, and she seemed oblivious to it. I got up, ran inside the apartment, and made a beeline to the bathroom mirror … where I saw absolutely nothing.
