When Target comes up with an idea, they REALLY come up with an idea! Target has vowed to give $1 BILLION dollars for education by the end of 2015. As part of this program, they’re giving $5 MILLION to little learners this Fall alone! $2.5 MILLION in support to schools on Facebook, based on votes. For every 25 votes a school gets (up to 10,000), they get a $25 gift card to use as they see fit for their classrooms. Plus, $2.5 MILLION in support to schools they know are in need.
Give with Target by visiting their app before September 8th!
I discussed this awesome initiative with Target representative, Jenna, while I was visiting one of their events this past week. She said they look for schools that need the funding – basing this on overall need (like how many kids get free/reduced lunches, etc).
The specific event I was a part of was one stop on the Target tour bus here in St. Louis, Missouri. Hollywood Records recording artist (and Disney Channel actress) Brdgit Mendler (Teddy from Good Luck Charlie) hosted a celebration at Sigel Elementary school to give Sigel Elementary School a $25,000 grant, PLUS $20,000 in school supplies, as part of Target’s “Give With Target” program.
Target is giving $25,000 to 100 schools in need, 4 of which are events like the one I got to visit! Bridgit said, “I’m having a blast traveling on the Target ‘Bullseye Bus’ and celebrating with schools across the country!”. A fellow blogger and I got to meet Bridgit, and were both really happy that she was down-to-earth and sweet. She discussed her college plans, what she loves about helping Target with these donations, and just life in general. I had to get a quick photo with Bridgit, because my kids LOVE her, and I had to prove that I met a Disney star!
The celebration with Target was a lot of fun, and the looks on the kid’s (and teachers’!) faces made it 10000 times better! The principal of Sigel, as well as the Superintendent of the St. Louis Schools, were both present to receive the $25,000 grant.
The $20,000 in school supplies included back packs full of awesome goodies for each student, plus iPads and other fun resources for use in the classrooms.
While I had a blast at the celebration, I was really stoked to check out the bus! I love that Target gives SO much to our community and so much to education. That leaves me wondering…
When will other companies hop on this bandwagon?
