Can You Be Racist Against White People?

25 Flares Pin It Share 0 Twitter 4 Facebook 21 StumbleUpon 0 Reddit 0 Google+ 0 25 Flares ×

Not sure how else to word that title… so hear me out. First of all, I want everyone reading this to know that I respect your opinions – even if they’re different from mine – and I will allow all comments to go through as long as they aren’t too crazy.

This post asked “Should White Women Attend Blogging Conferences for Women of Color“? While reading the post, I wasn’t upset. However, after reading through other posts on Bicultural Mom’s blog, I was very sad. While I think it is awesome that she is embracing her husband’s heritage, I find it disheartening that it seems she has not found a balance between embracing his heritage and accepting hers.

Reading through the comments on the above linked post, you will see varying views. This comment, though, I disagree with – and I want to know what you think.

Can you be racist against white people?

I have so much more I’d like to say, but I am going to leave it at that today. I would love to hear your thoughts on this question.

If you can’t see the image clearly, Bicultural Mom said:

Just want to point out…prejudice against white folks is not “racism”, it’s “prejudice” or “discrimination”. Racism is something else entirely…it’s a system that acts against people of color in this country (established through slavery and colonization)…so their is a difference.

Bicultural Mom talks a lot about White Privilege. She says Kraft’s commercial perpetuates stereotypes and white supremacy, and calls for a boycott of Kraft because of this commercial.

So, tell me… Can one be racist against white people? Why or why not? Please be respectful when answering.

Please remember that Bicultural Mom and I are both real people and just because we are bloggers and online personalities doesn’t mean that rude comments hurt any less. So please keep that in mind when responding. Try to keep personal attacks (towards anyone) out of the comments.

nichole - The way i see it, racism, prejudice, and discrimination are all the same thing. This isnt “back inthe day” where everyone is segregated. Everyone bleeds red. The problem now a days is alotofblack people complain that whites are still racist against them but then theygo out and make blacksonly meetings. What the hell? They are the ones keeping themselves segregated!!!!!!!!!!!!

Astaroth - Most definitely you can be racist against white people. To me, her statement is extremely ignorant. In this statement she completely brushes off racism against whites, and discounts it as if it means nothing. It is a real thing. Racism doesn’t stop at one race; it doesn’t become null and void because of past happenings. The statement in and of itself, to me, drips with the mery thing she’s trying to ‘okay’. Because a white person isn’t of another color; they’re being discriminated against. Sounds like racism to me.

*disclaimer* But; I welcome a different view even if I don’t agree with it or think it makes sense.

Leila - I am completely lost on all this “racist” “discrimination” “prejudice” crap. It is 2012 for Pete’s sake! I don’t understand why we even have the need to rub color into people’s faces. We are all human beings regardless of skin color (or any other bull crap you want to pull). There is zero reason for someone to rub their white-ness in my face or their latina-ness in my face or their black-ness in my face. I personally could care less of if your black, white, brown, yellow or orange. I don’t care. We are all human beings and deserve to be treated equally. That does not mean I am better than you and should not respect you and that does not mean you are better than me and should not respect me.

It irritates the hell out of me that I am trying to raise two young children in a messed up world and trying to teach them not to judge when there are grown ass adults judging and disrespecting based on the color of one’s skin! The last thing I thought I would have to worry about is grown up, adult people being racists/discriminatory/prejudice to others! Grow up and be role models for your children otherwise there is just going to be a vicious cycle of history past.

Kelly - Hmm. Ok, I can’t say I’m “racist”. I can say there are people I DON’T LIKE. Infact, don’tn like A LOT! But their color has nothing to do with it. I’m not looking at skin color, I’m looking at their actions. So, I’m white. And well, there are some white (trash) that I cannot stand. There are some “black” and “brown” people I feel this unlikeness for too. So, am I racist? No. There’s all kinds of people I don’t like.
Am I missing the point?

Dottie Prater - I am certain her comment was not meant the way it came across. At least I certainly hope not. I too was greatly offended by tht statement. Racism exists. PERIOD. It does not differentiate between color. To say that it does is demoralising every white person in existence. It isn’t attached to ANY race or color. No-one holds the market on it. I have experienced racism towards myself , and yes, I know what it is. It isn’t pleasant to say the least, but to add insult to injury, being told it ISN’T racism because I am not black? Talk about slapping both sides of my face!!

Cindy H - It’s 2012. Recently in the news, it stated that “white or caucasions” will actually be the minority in America. Coming from a multi-cultural family, through adoption, I feel like people should quit playing the “black and white card”. I’m sick of it. I think that people in our generation, don’t know the extent of what happened in history. I think they play off of eachother to get sympathy. And that is ANYONE… not just one culture or another. Plus if you really think about it, NO one was origianally from the United States, except the American Indians. SO…… people need to quit acting so stupid. We are all in this world together so why not help eachother out. And people really wonder why our country is falling apart…

SlapDashMom - If I was certain her comment was not meant the way it came across, I wouldn’t have posted it. :) If you take a look around her blog you will get a better feel for how she feels about white people.

Pamela - Wow! First I want to say, I really love your blog SDM. I think I like it (and you) so much, because you are not afraid to say the things you think and ask the questions you have but always in a calm, matter-of-fact, inclusive way. I don’t fear disagreeing with you will bring the wrath of the gods down on me :) So, about your question- No, I do not believe you can be “racist” against white people. I actually completely agree with Bicultural Mom and feel she gave a very sound explanation for her opinion. I think you have to remember the centuries of pain and suffering black people have endured in this country and understand that the term “racism” refers to that, i.e.- race-based prejudice, violence, dislike, discrimination, or oppression. I believe the term “reverse-racism” is a very recent term coined by bigots who seek to dilute the publics memory as to what real racism is all about. White people are not oppressed. White gay people are oppressed. White poor people are oppressed. But that has everything to do with their sexual orientation and social economic standing and NOTHING to do with the color of their skin. Thanks for posting this question. I really appreciate it :)

Meg Tucker - “Should White Women Attend Bloogong Conferences for Women of Color?” Are you kidding me? Seriously? Who even talks like that? Whatever…..I’ll leave it at that!

emily - Yes, there is racism towards ‘whites’.
Here is the dictionary definition “hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.” If somebody does not like whites or finds they are better than others then they would be a racist. I can’t believe that someone would just saying that they are being prejudice not racist. There are people of all colors bringing their kids up to think that they are better than other races. I lived below a family that openly disliked whites. When their son was bullying my son in school and using ‘racial terms’ nobody seemed to care though at his school. People are afraid to say anything. It got to the point where the police were called and I brought up the fact that racial terms were being said to my husband and I by the parents but the police even seemed to be afraid to do anything. The officer said to me “Well if you don’t like it, it’s America, you can move!”

SlapDashMom - To be fair, the subject was brought up by me. In a blogging group I’m in, a white woman asked if it’d be appropriate for her to attend a “diverse” and “multicultural” conference. A Latina blogger said that the brands that attend those conferences are looking for non-white bloggers (obviously not in those words, but she did not beat around the bush). She said that when they say they are looking for “diversity”, they are only referring to race. I disagreed with her, so I wrote to the conference coordinator to get clarification. The coordinator wrote back saying that the woman was clearly mistaken. I then wrote a blog post about it, to share with others that had been misinformed by this blogger. Bicultural Mom picked up on it, and that is what sparked the post in question. However, I agree with you, this should have never been an issue. To say that brands are only looking to non-white bloggers was racist in itself (towards white people, which is another reason this post needed to be made).

Leila - I have to say, I was very interested in your answer, but may I ask you one question. You state that you do not believe you can be “racist” against white people because white people are not oppressed. Based on that statement and that statement alone – a white person not able to get a job because they do not speak Spanish; is that not a white person being oppressed? A white blogger (specifically as it applies to the situations that began these talks) not being accepted into a certain group or opportunity *because* they are white; is that not a white person being oppressed?
Leila recently posted..Wendy’s Father’s Day Frosty WeekendMy Profile

Nicoyle - Ok, racism is disliking someone just because of their race whether it be white, black, etc. So definitely someone can be racist against whites, not just people of color. I think it just nonsense if you judge someone by the color of their skin nowadays. Also, I really don’t get the “white supremacy” of the commercial. Why try to get all deep about a commercial. It’s a food commercial.. of a granola bar, what the heck?
Nicoyle recently posted..Had a Blast at Myrtle BeachMy Profile

Heather W - First her comment (and comments on her blog) is part of why we keep going through and dealing with these issues, some people just don’t get it..

White, Caucasian, American how ever you want to say it is a race to therefor their is racism against them (us,me) just Luke any other race. All races deal with racism in some degrees, some more do than others. Yes African American/Blacks had a really horrible time of it for a very long time, but the Indians did too. I don’t know why people tend to forget them in this. (but that’s my own personal opinion)
What I don’t understand is how “Black” people can call whites so racist but yet those same ones are just has bad if not worse (due to bitter anger from the past) and treat whites horried because of their skin colour or the “sins” of the whites before them. I never not once hurt none of them or have I spoke I’ll words toward anyone but yet in school I was bullied, degraded, and actuly hit because my skin was white. That was the only reason they did it. I was quite and never stepped out or sole out ever to anyone but that didn’t matter because I was white. Some apologized when they came adults and now regret their actions but it just shows that some hate and treat other races wrong just because they feel insulted by what the whites befor us done. And that’s is racism!!
So yes from my own personal experience I think there is and can be racism toward whites and people of all races. I wish it wasn’t like that though, we are all human and we all deserve to be treated fairly and just.

(great topic by the way, :)

SlapDashMom - lol I must say I thought it was comical that she thought a granola bar commercial was about white supremacy.

Brittany - That comment is absurd.
rac·ism
   [rey-siz-uhm] Show IPA
noun
1.
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.
a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Racism is the hate of a race – ANY race. It is not some special hatred just for certain colors. It can be directed at anyone, of any color.
Brittany recently posted..Dresden (part one)My Profile

The Mommy Chronicles - What’s the difference? Racism, prejudice, discrimination….it’s all the same thing. And it can come from anyone of any race, plain and simple. It’s not okay for white people to be going around, beating up people of color….if that happens, it’s called a hate crime. So if a person of color does it against a white person, then it should be a hate crime as well.
Racism, in any form, is simply NOT okay, regardless of WHO the racist person is. I can’t fathom thinking that my race is superior or owed something and to say that white people can’t be discriminated against or be a victim of racism is just ridiculous.

Racism, as defined by Merriam-Webster: : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2: racial prejudice or discrimination

Clearly, they are one in the same when it comes to race.
The Mommy Chronicles recently posted..Tuesday TidbitsMy Profile

Ashlee - I think it is definitely possible to be racist against white people. We live in a society that has organization after organization specifically for other races, whether it be black, brown, or purple, for crying out loud. BUT if there was, for example, a TV channel (like BET) or a month dedicated to white people, it would be so completely frowned upon, and probably shut down. We aren’t allowed to have groups such as the NAACP or an award show honoring only white people… And I don’t see how this is fair.

Don’t get me wrong, I love my country and I am PROUD of my heritage!! But we shouldn’t still be paying for the mistakes of our ancestors. I don’t feel like ANY race should get precedence over another. We’re all human, and like someone else said, we all bleed red!

nichole - https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1333455660911.48461.1366638633&type=3 i made this public so everone could see. Its funny i made it a year ago. It brings humor to a serious REAL subject. But it basically answers the question…

Crystal - I totally agree… I think that people are so worried about being labeled Racist that they forget that EVERY color can be prejudiced against. Yes, black people were oppressed in the past, Yes that shouldn’t be forgotten. But that doesn’t give black people the right to special treatment now. It was a long long time ago and a lot has changed in the world. Very few of us are truly 100% Caucasian. White is a label for what you see on the outside, but how many of us are mixed? I know I am, but if you look at me all you would see is a white girl. I am blonde, green eyed, fair skin, and yet I am more Puerto Rican then Caucasian. People need to stop looking at fair skin as being “the devil” “the enemy”. I have known more black racists then I have white.

Pamela - Great question Leila, thanks for asking! “Based on that statement and that statement alone – a white person not able to get a job because they do not speak Spanish; is that not a white person being oppressed?”- No, that is not a white person being oppressed. That is a person not having the skills for that particular job. I cannot be a computer programmer because I can’t read code. I cannot be an architect because I am not good at math. It has nothing to do with the color of my skin. It has to do with your knowledge and abilities as related to the job your applying for. As far as the meeting for bloggers specifically designed to engage women of color, I don’t think you would be turned away from attending. I think like anything else, people try to address different groups that may be under-represented in larger, more well known events. I am sure there are other meetings focused primarily on, say, women, mothers, certain sports or areas of interest. This is a very common occurrence and in no way discriminatory.

Lola K - A white person not being able to get a job b/c they don’t speak Spanish is not racism. In that case, they’d be passed up because they don’t speak a particular language, not because of the color of their skin. A Latina prospective employee who doesn’t speak Spanish would also be turned down. So would a black employee who did not speak Spanish.
However, a white person who did speak Spanish would be considered for the job. As would a black person who did speak Spanish. Plenty of non-Latina people speak Spanish, and plenty of Latinas are white (I’m one of them).
If you want to be a teacher, you need a degree. If you want to be a mechanic you need to know how to fix cars. If you want to work with the public in a heavily Hispanic area, you have to learn Spanish.

SlapDashMom - Why are events that focus on women of color okay, but if you were to have an event to focus on white women, it’d be deemed racist? I feel there’s a double standard and would love for someone to explain it. Especially because white people are becoming more of a minority than ever before.

Melody - Where’s the like button? Sorry, I’ll leave my real comment after reading all the comments, but this one made me look for the like button til I remembered that this isn’t Facebook lol!
Melody recently posted..Fun in the SunMy Profile

Melody - Okay there are a LOT more comments than I expected, so I’m skipping to add my two cents.
Racism is a REAL thing, and I’ve read a few of this person’s blogs. She’s definitely RACIST against white people. There are black people who are racist against blacks, whites, and everyone else, and it exists in every. single. race. Just because you want to identify with your husband’s race, and your children’s doesn’t mean that while you’re speaking out against racism against blacks, Hispanics, Chinese (the list goes on) that you should begin to hate your own race. I’m white, I know that what my ancestors may or may not have done in the past is wrong. Hating any race is wrong no matter what your reasoning. It DOES exist. That’s like people saying that the Holocaust never happened. Let’s push all that history to the side so that we can state our opinions!!!! No, it still existed, and it was a sad part of the German heritage (and Americans..)
I’m completely sick of people picking one race and singling out all the rest. I know that I’ve done wrong when it comes to a lot of things, and I don’t want people to hate me because of those mistakes. So why would I hate a group of people for mistakes in their pasts or in their ancestors pasts? You can’t go back and change someone else’s mind or actions. This woman needs to start thinking and maybe see someone about her aggressiveness (since she refuses to call it racism) and get that all sorted.
Until that happens, I won’t be going back to her blog. It’s no different than going to a KKK site and calling it “literature.” It’s trash, plain and simple. Are these comments rude? Maybe, but they’re also the truth. I speak nothing but… I call a kettle black, and her a racist. The End.
Melody recently posted..Fun in the SunMy Profile

Pamela - Well SDM, I think what you need to remember is, specific events for specific groups of people are primarily to give a group that may be historically under-represented a voice in a public forum. I am not a blogger but I would guess that if you did a study you might find that the blogging world is made up primarily of white men first, men of color, white woman, then women of color. That is just a guess. Again, I’m not a blogger. But I am trying to paint a picture that illustrates the reasons behind having certain focus groups and the need to have such groups. Our country is skewed towards white in many ways. We are fully represented in every aspect of public discourse. I don’t think it is neccessary to have an event for “white women only” because we have loud voices that are already listened to and represented. Women of color are still trying to acheive this because they have been left behind for so many years, they need to catch up. White people are not a minority in this country. Even if, by chance, some day we are, I truly believe it will be a long time before white people are no longer the majority in positions of power.

Lola K - The problem I think that many people don’t realize is that racism and ethnocentrism against non-whites is actually limiting on an institutional level, whereas racism or prejudice or whatever you want to call it against whites is generally on a personal level – in other words, if you’re a white person in a predominatly non-white neighborhood, you might get verbally assaulted, maybe even physically and don’t get me wrong – it sucks and it’s not right, but it’s on a personal level. White privilage is so embedded in this country that you wouldn’t even notice it unless you were excluded from it. While the only white kid in school might get picked on and maybe even physically hit – that white kid will have not have to “prove himself” as “one of the good ones” once he moves out into the professional world. Non-whites generally do (except for Asians who are always assumed to be quiet and smart). A white person doesn’t have to worry about being turned down by landlords becuase of race, or being followed around a store, or about being able to find foundation in her shade. A white woman can walk into a salon and be confident that she’ll be able to get her hair done (because standard cosmetology covers “white” haircare, but black haircare is “specialized”). A white person won’t have to be worried about getting bad service at a restaurant because “white people never tip.” – the list goes on, and it may seem insignificant, but it’s because it’s difficult to see if you’re not on the excluded end.
And that’s why there are tv channels for black and Hispanic populations – it’s a reaction to an exclusionary culture, if tv shows were truly diverse, there wouldn’t be a need for it.
Now, I know someone is going to respond and say “Well, what about affirmative action? Black people get jobs over white people!” Whenever I hear that, I snicker to myself because if you are woman, you are a beneficiary of affirmative action. And there would be no need for affirmative action period, if employers were truly colorblind, but even now in 2012 we need regulations put in place to ensure hiring is done on an equal basis.
Next argument will be scholarships – yes, there are scholarships available for non-whites. It’s because it’s obviously concerning to that particular community that the ratio of students of color at universities is low as opposed to whites, so they decided to do something about it. People act as if you automatically get a free ride to college if you’re not white, and it’s just simply not the case – you have to have academic merit or proven potential. You don’t just get a scholarship because you’re not white. There are also plenty of scholarships available to specific white ethnic groups – and it’s for the same reason, it’s a reaction to being excluded. And there are many, many, many more scholarships available for everyone under the sun.
I don’t know – racism by definition is attributing certain characteristics to a group of people based solely on their race, so yes, white racism is real – but it’s not institutionalized or limiting like it is towards non-whites.

Racism, Prejudice, & Discrimination: Today's Double Standard - [...] “We all bleed red.” (Great quote that someone commented on this post.) [...]

SlapDashMom - In the latest post on blogger stats, I was told Latinas make up 75% of the mom bloggers. I doubt that is true, but when I attend blogging conferences there is a great mix of people attending. I wouldn’t say there is a clear leader as far as color makeup… but I also don’t tend to notice color so I could be completely wrong.

I don’t think it’s necessary to have a “women of color” blogging event any more than it is necessary to have a “white women” blogging event.

Pamela - Great answer Lola. Thanks for the in-depth explanation :)

Jaclyn - As I read the comment, she is not saying white people do not get discriminated against. She’s simply offering up a different definition of racism than what i might use my definition is simply “discrimination based on racial heritage”, while hers is a far more specific “discrimination against people of color dating back to slavery/colonization times and still in existence”. She also seems to be hinting that its more than just the attitudes of individual people, but a much broader umbrella, perhaps including laws, politics, the economy and overall culture as well.
Don’t be upset by her comment. I don’t think you actually disagree much on the issue…I think you’re just arguing semantics.

SlapDashMom - Jaclyn, if I had not read the rest of her blog and her rants about white people, I may not have given the comment a second thought. However, I did post this to get other opinions and I appreciate yours. :) Thanks!

Ellen Christian - I believe that any time a person is judged or excluded based on their race, it is racism. Any time a person is judged or excluded based on their sex, it is sexism. What the specific sex or race is should not matter at all. People should be judged based on who they are, how they act, and what they do and not what they look like. The rules need to go both ways to be fair.
Ellen Christian recently posted..Watch this New Trailer – BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA 3My Profile

Renea P. - White is a color, and a race, so yes, you can be racist against white people.

Jaclyn - Ahhh…well that changes the image, sadly. :( Hate comes in all colors, and is a learned behavior. I think I see it decreasing with younger generations, but unfortunately some role models will continue to set poor examples. :/

Andrew Rojahn - So I didn’t read all of the comments, and I apologize of any of this has been said before. Also, I apologize for any typos/grammatical errors, as I’m typing this on my iPhone and the screen is annoying. #first world problems #amiright? (also, sorry, I actually dislike hash tags, but I recognize their connotations, and really, they occasionally work really well)

ANYWAY…I think that most definitely, yes, racism can occur against whites. Having said that, I feel that when it does, it’s not looked at as Racism. It’s really hard to have a discussion about any of this without getting into theory and quoting well-respected theorists like Chinua Achebe. But the problem comes down to a matter of privilege. White, heterosexual, masculine, (the list can go on and on) males are the privileged group. Can you be sexist against men? I would think so, and I would imagine that everyone else on here who says you can be racist against whites would see the similarities and agree.

The problem, then, in my opinion, takes me to a new level. Surely racism exists beyond the confrontational/calling it out sphere. I wouldn’t imagine anyone would disagree with me on that. But I think the problem that this brings up is: “how would I, as a white male, call out someone being racist/prejudiced against whites”. While I have done this, it’s hard to do. In the back of my mind, I always think “well I am privileged, who am I to say that the group that is normally oppressed is now oppressing me”. It creates a discomfort, whether real or just perceived. How defensive will people get if I call them out for being racist against the privileged group? Is it right to do that? I don’t know, these questions require more thought than I am willing to put in at 9:30 after I got done working 11 hours. Yet, I loved writing this!

TL:DR – can a privileged group call out a non-privileged class on discrimination? That’s the main question I ask..

P.S. SDM, if you read this, I will get you my blog when it has a couple more recent posts…I’ve pretty much abandoned it over this last year…

SlapDashMom - I would love to see your blog, and I love #hashtags!! :) I’m too tired to respond to the rest right now, I will tomorrow! <3

Swanky Jay - This is one of the most ignorant things I have ever read. Racism is not about oppression. They have a word for that…what was it…thinking, thinking, thinking….oh yes…OPPRESSION. Hate against a race (any race) is racism. That is one of the worst blogs I have ever read. It is full of stereotypes and misconceptions.

To say you can’t be racist against white people, is like saying ONLY women can be raped, sexually harassed, or sexually assaulted, or like saying you can’t be sexist against men.

Anyone who uses “slave trade” as a reason to be racist, should understand that it started with the Dutch selling white people. While it was definitely less common in America…there were white/hispanic slaves as well.

SlapDashMom - Wow, that is a perfect comparison… I agree 100% with your second paragraph!

Ryan - Racism, prejudice, and discrimination are all different terms that are all related. I live in a predominately black area. Most of the white people don’t agree with interracial relationships. I, coming from a family of mixed beliefs, don’t personally care. I’ve dated and been friends with white people, black, people, hispanic people, and asian people. The key word to me there is people. A lot of the black people here openly don’t like white people. They call themselves antiwhites or they call themselves racist against whites. Being racist isn’t something that should happen but it does, usually as a result of ignorance. However it isn’t something reserved that only one race can have against another. That is a big double standard.

Bill Myers - Bicultural Mom is wrong. That’s not simply my opinion. It is objective fact. Where do I get off saying such a thing? Easy: I can back it up with a good dictionary. According to the Microsoft Encarta Dictionary that comes with Word 2007, racism is defined as “prejudice or animosity against people who belong to other races.” If you check other dictionaries (and no, I do not have the time or the inclination to cite them all), you’ll find similar definitions. Nowhere to those definitions mention a system, or limit the concept to a specific race or races. If you judge people based on their race, you are are by definition a racist.

What Bicultural Mom is trying to do is redefine a word to suit her own agenda. Unfortunately, she’s not alone; I’ve heard other people perpetuate the same nonsense. I am trying to be as nice as possible but it drives me NUTS the way people uncritically accept such inaccurate ideas. I mean, dictionaries are widely available! People would be well-served to check their facts before making these kinds of assertions.

Now, one could argue that non-whites may be capable of racism but not oppression. They’d be on somewhat firmer ground, but not by much. I mean, Ken Chenault, the CEO of American Express — a giant corporation — is black. Is anyone willing to argue that a man who has the might of multinational financial juggernaut at his disposal is incapable of oppression?

I think it is not useful to speak in absolutes, but to understand that there are subtle shadings to these issues. Yes, the dominant historical pattern in this country has been one of whites oppressing non-whites. Nevertheless, things are changing, and there are exceptions.

So, back to my original point: non-whites can be racist. While I can understand what might drive, say, a black person to be racist, ultimately it’s no less irrational or wrong coming from a black person than it is coming from someone who is white.

Words have meaning, and are the fundamental building blocks of communication. If some of us ignore the meanings of certain words, we lose the ability to communicate. That’s dangerous, because communication above all else is our best weapon in the fight against racism and other forms of bigotry.

SlapDashMom - Amen, Bill… another great response from you. I think you need to be a blogger. lol

Bill Myers - Thanks, Sadie. You’re very sweet. I used to be an ardent blogger but haven’t done anything like that for a few years. For me, it just became too difficult to find the time to look for interesting topics and write something worthwhile about them. It’s easier to ride on someone’s coattails. Yours, for instance. :)

I don’t know how you find the time to do this while attending to your other responsibilities! As long as you do, though, I’ll just pop in here from time to time. :)

SlapDashMom - It seems like there aren’t enough hours in the day. :) I appreciate you stopping by!

Chayo - Anyone can be racist! A Latino person can be racist and have hatred for white people, a white person can be racist against the asian community; overall racism is racism and its wrong. Yes, there are people out there who do not like white people. I have even heard white people say they hate being white and cannot stand white people. Overall I have more than one answer: #1. There are people who have a strong anger towards white people because of slavery, racism, classism and the fact that caucasians have more poltical power, more money and some believe that white people control the media. #2. Some people dont have positive vibes from white people because they abuse their white priveledge. #3 Stereotypes: Valley girl, rich white soccer mom with a nanny, billion air snob, racist white person are not liked very much by others. I feel anyone is entitled to their opinion but how you were raised and the color of your skin does not determine if your racist or arrogent thats just how you are but it is 2012 and if you are racist or arrogent then pick up a book or buy you a kindle and get to reality. Racism is not cute and will not fly these days so get educated please and lets try to enform those who are racist that their actions and words are hurtful.

Chayo - Well, for the Latina bloggers being 75%, Id think the reason would be that there are over 20 countries in Latin America and the carribean islands; the women were probably still there and you didnt see them lol. But overall from reading your blogs you seem very openminded and I really do believe you when you wrote “but I also don’t tend to notice color so I could be completely wrong”. Attending any event and estimating how many people are white, brown, black or asain is kind of useless to me as an individual.Although, blogs are all about perspectives and opinions and sharing thoughts so it is kind of important for bloggers to be of different backgrounds. Events for “Women of Color” are needed because there needs to be more support for those women. Black, Latina, Asian, middle eastern and other minorities have been banned from education in the U.S, they were slaves, day laborers, faced racism and prejudice for over 500 years. Minorities are behind white people when it comes to education, better jobs and more pay. For example; my grandparents picked cotton and were not allowed to go certain places and recieve a free education even though they were born in the U.S My mother went to talk to her school advisor multiple times to see how she could get into college and if she could recieve help andshe was turned away for having a spanish surname and dark features. I on the other hand recieved multiple scholarships, went to college and do not have the same struggles they did because I live in a different time period. I really dont think “women of color events” are needed for people who are under 25 because we do have the same opportunities as white women do but events that encourage minorities to persue other things are needed because there isnt enough representation for everyone.

SlapDashMom - I disagree with you on one point. Minorities are not behind when it comes to education. 50 years ago maybe, but not today. They’re given the same opportunities. So the people I am personally dealing with on a daily basis that are my age, have been given the same chances I have.

Chayo - Im so sorry your son was called names that should of never happened. I think there are double standards. Its not ok for a white kid to call any minority any racial slur but its ok for minorities to say racist remarks about or to a white kid. Yes people are racist towards white people, its not as bad as black people have it but its still racism and needs to stop. The school should of had an assembly and educated all the school children that any racism is bad and its wrong for all people.

Chayo - Yes minorities in the last 30 years have Actually been given opportunities but then there are also more obsticles for those minorities and many of those obsticles still exist. Minorites can go to school and there are no segregating laws but not as many minorities are graduating from high school and compleating college. One of the main problems is that minorities get into college but are unable to graduate for multiple reasons.

SlapDashMom - It’s not just minorities that are unable to graduate for multiple reasons. It’s a level playing field with education. Or, well, maybe not. When is the last time someone was awarded a scholarship just for being white?

olala - This is offensive. Racism is racism.
“White” is a race also.. or what do you think? That we’re no humans or something? We’re aliens then?
srlsy.

White men did shit in the past but now its all over. No white person today has something to do with the past!!

SlapDashMom - Very good points, Olala. We should not have to pay for things our ancestors may or may not have done.

Chrystal S - Yes you can be a victim of racism if white and I have been!! Also, you ever hear of indentured servants? Almost all were WHTE!!!! And died without being technically free. So what’s that? Does it not count because they were white? Blacks sold black slaves to white men (but lets ignore that fact…). Anyway back to the question, yes you can!!!

I am told I owned slaves or my family did so I am horrible. 1)I’m 22, I never owned slaves and you were never a slave…period! 2) My family immigrated here after slavery ended….so yeah my family never owned slaves. And only 1% of the population owned 99% of the slaves so most people never owned any!!

So it’s not racist when people hate me because I’m white? Attack me because I’m white? Verbally harass me because I’m white? And make no qualms THAT is why they are doing those things? I got passed up for aid when I was more in need because I was white. Turned down for scholarships when I fit every criteria but the color of my skin was white. Now a days you can’t play the race card and say it’s harder because you are of color! I live in So Cal, trust me people are doing just fine if they aren’t white! I have even gotten spit on because I’m white. They can’t hire white employees or they can’t accept more whites to a college because they need to make sure they have lots of other races and not a lot of whites or it looks bad. We are all people. End of story. So I always now refuse to answer what race I am. Because I should be judged on my merits and so should everyone else.

But I suppose those that say you can’t be racist towards whites will just disregard what has happened to me…why? Because I’m white…..sounds kinda racist doesn’t it?

JC - Caucasian people will remain the majority for a very long time. When these studies are grouping all minorities together then saying minorities will outnumber Caucasians. Caucasians will still be the majority race in America.

Chloe - I’m biracial, but I look caucasian. I live in a community that is predominantly Asian. It’s wonderful; we have authentic food from just about everywhere, we get products that are difficult to find anywhere else in the state, and more language options exist in our schools. But as a student, I’ve faced some strange, even racist things. I’m an honors student, and according to testing am incredibly intelligent. However, many of my classmates have said I must be stupid because they perceive me as white. My family eats food from around the world (we even cook it at home!) but I’m told we can’t eat many foods because we are perceived as white. I’ve been told that because I am “white” that I must be racist, even though I can honestly say I have never judged a person my their skin color. I’ve been told I can’t play video games, or read manga, or listen to Korean pop. Why? Because of my perceived race. That is racism.

Terri - I live in an area where black and white people are pretty even in numbers. Also we have a lot of Hispanic people. We seem to all get along. The thing that just really gets me to ticked off is the fact that the United States feels the need to give black (I use this form of identification as its what the African American people in my area call themselves ) people more free everything to pay them back for slavery. 1st there were white slaves brought to America first and they were treated worse and didn’t have a long life expectancy. 2nd Why aren’t the African leaders that sold their own people for money ever held responsible. 3rd I have a 24 yr old son and 3 of his best friends were black. They all hung out at my house most weekends so I new them well and not one of the 3 or other black kids that came over new anything about slavery but that some relatives of theirs was a slave. Nothing more and when I tried informing them of their history they told me that was the past and didn’t care to know about it. The one and only thing said by some was they were glad a relative was a slave here otherwise they would be living in Africa and they wouldn’t like that.4 th Anyone can be what they want as long as they have the intelligence and or personality. I am so tired of hearing the white person will be favored and how a black person can never go far in work or anything cause he’s black. I say the black person who thinks that way obviously won’t go far not as he is black but he’s gone into it thinking he won’t. I feel by having groups, scholarships an Al Sharpton think there doing good, but in reality bring black people down.

john - I hate white people for being stupid and letting our counttry be taken over by scum
